Amicus Receives its First Grant in a National Competition!

This post from Louise Wolfgramm,  Amicus President . . .

I could not be more pleased to report that Amicus has just received its first grant in a national competition!  Last spring we applied for funding for our One to One program from the Second Chance Act (SCA) Mentoring Grants to Non-Profit Organizations.  This month we were notified that Amicus is one of 18 organizations in the country awarded an SCA Mentoring grant. The award is approximately $300,000 over two years, beginning October 1, 2010.  Seventeen other awards were made to organizations in Minnesota, Alabama, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Maine, Florida, Washington D.C. and Mississippi, including our friends at Good Will/Easter Seals Minnesota. We send them our congratulations.

This grant gives us the opportunity to not just do more, but to do it better. We’ll be able to recruit volunteers more actively and enhance the training we give them. We’ll be able to participate in more robust evaluations of our programs and learn from them to improve our service. And we’ll be able to share our mentoring model with others across the nation. Amicus provides a unique and time-tested program, and we’re happy to see our efforts supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Our project will include the following re-entry components:

  • One to one mentoring
  • Employment Advantage classes
  • Reconnect services

These services address the key underlying issues for re-entering offenders: isolation, employment and difficulty connecting to fragmented services.  Project partners will be Hennepin and Ramsey County Supervised Release Departments, DOC , as well as 40 or more agencies in the Reconnect referral network.

The target service population will include offenders who are:

  1. 9-12 months from release
  2. Slated for release to Hennepin or Ramsey County
  3. Incarcerated at Stillwater, Lino Lakes or Shakopee

Our thanks go not only to the Bureau of Justice, but to our skilled grant writers, Deb Sweeney and Kathy Meyer, and all our volunteers, donors and supporters for  making us worthy of winning.  We welcome your inquiries if you are interested in volunteering as a One to One friend.
